Success Stories
Jy Nunley
Penry Gustafson had the joy of awarding Jy with a scholarship in 2021, and here are Penry's kind words about that moment: "Jy is a dedicated warrior of success, overcoming homelessness, who never lost focus on academics and work. This Camden High School graduate is an example of grit and grace. Jy Nunley has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by her senator, the newest member of the Women’s Legislative Caucus."
We are proud of Jy for being named 2021 South Carolina's "Youth of the Year".
Kalab Haven
Kalab is a talented athlete and graduate from North Central High School. When Chronicle-Independent contributing columnist and State Sen. Penry Gustafson heard about Kalab's athletic scholarship, she sent him a congratulatory letter. After receiving a thank you note back from him, Penry and Kalab talked about his journey and future plans. He was humble and brave, confiding in Penry about needing additional financial help.
Penry was honored to present Kalab with a $1,000 scholarship at his graduation party. "With a strong will and determination, Kalab is going to be a success, for he, too, displays grit and grace" says Penry.
